12 years of marriage (!)

I did a decent job last year recapping the last 11 year of marriage, which is good because I'm too lazy to do so this year.

While I think my last year self would have loved for us to have been on a trip of some sort today, that was unfortunately not the case... I barely saw Drew today! Between hosting a baby shower, going to little d's soccer game, attending a bridal shower and then working, he spent most of today with the kids (who cannot stop running away, all over the neighborhood, heaven help us!) and I spent most of the day in the car listening to my podcasts.

So while today was busier than I wanted it to be, it was a good couple of hours to reflect on our relationship for me. I started another round of whole30 earlier this week, and definitely not for the best reasons. We were supposed to go out of town for a day or two down south this weekend and obviously that fell through, so my way of coping was initially to eat my feelings, then I felt the need to reset that and feel better about myself this week by whole30-ing, which was pretty unfair to Drew since the reason we did not go was outside of his and my control.

The podcast I have been listening to the most is Nutrition Redefined, and I am just about caught up after not listening for a few weeks. There is so much that she talks about that truly resonates with me as Truth as she spoke about intuitive eating (which is something I really need to explore and research more) and something she said triggered some memories of Mother's Day a few years ago when I embarked on my first whole30, which left Drew and the kids unable to make me meals because I just said I would take care of it myself. It is definitely one of my biggest regrets to date. So when Drew asked me to pick out a whole30-approved restaurant for dinner tonight, I thought to myself, this is one of those moments. That I can stick to my guns and whole30 on with what I was planning on making for dinner (because: planning!) because I am stubborn and brought this upon myself, or I could accept that I was already getting home after 7pm, Drew and I both needed some time together to relax and enjoy a night of food that wouldn't be whole30 but certainly would not be something like McDonald's that would cause immediate regret. And when I really thought about what I was going for in my life, it was not to lose weight or do the most whole30s, it was to be happy and healthy and to have a good relationship with food and not make it weird for people around me but make food something we can celebrate in a healthy way with.

Sushi has been that celebratory food for us for the last few years: I love it on my birthday, while pregnant, on anniversaries and any excuse we have to spend a little extra money on yummy food because it is one of the few meals we would never make ourselves but we love eating! So on my way home I found a really highly rated Sushi place right up the street from us that I never even knew existed and brought a few rolls home to share. The kids had done one of their houdinis when I came home, so about an hour after I came home we settled in what I had brought and bless his heart, the first question Drew asked when he opened the container was "Okay, which one of these can you eat?". I told him I could eat all of them, because I can, because I am a grown woman and can make my own decisions, and part of my Food Freedom is making empowered choices and being happy with whatever the consequences are. Drew knows that me doing whole30 is mostly because I love the way it makes me feel-- I have energy and feel most in control of my food choices, and most importantly I feel healthy. But one meal celebrating the 12 happiest years of my life was well worth stepping out of my comfort zone and I have no regrets--not even about the heath and oreo concrete I had after the sushi! Probably because I still have all the stuff at home ready for me to go back to the comfort and security of Whole30 tomorrow.

Anyways this post was not meant to be one about whole30. What it is meant to be is a reflection on my relationship with Drew in the last 12, but especially the last year. A year which has been one of tremendous growth and change and transition and difficulty. Drew is finally in a job where we see him home for dinner every night, something I hope I never take for granted. We have been emerging from the cocoon/fog of making and raising babies and now that the twins are potty trained, we are entering a new phase in life that doesn't have to revolve around naps or needing diaper bags. It is sometimes strange and different but good, to be able to focus more on myself than I have in about 8 years. An opportunity came up last month for me to sign up for a painting class in May and I was hesitant to take it because of little d's sports schedule. Drew insisted I go ahead and sign up and we would figure it out, and sure enough we are able to work around it, but then Drew found out he has his softball games the same nights as my class! What I am trying to say is that between watching the kids while I went off to Seattle for a conference and supporting me through a whole30 earlier this year, plus a hundred other things that I could mention, Drew has been my biggest supporter in figuring myself out. It is not without growing pains but we are getting somewhere, and I am grateful every day that I have him by my side because he is truly my soulmate and best friend. I never would have ran a marathon without him signing me up, never would have survived the twins without him by my side, or realized my love for the 2016 Honda Pilot without his nudging and encouraging patience. He is the reason we have lived in all the wonderful homes we have found and lived in and he is the reason why I feel more confident in my role as a wife and mother and woman now than I did 12 years ago.

Honestly I don't remember much about our wedding day anymore, as the moments between the posed pictures become even more blurred over time, but I remember feeling like I really truly loved him
with all my heart and I would do anything for him. I still cannot believe we have been through so much in only 12 years. I feel like I have changed the most of the two of us, mostly out of necessity because of my role as mother the last 8 years, but seeing Drew come into his own since we came out here has been really fun. For most of our marriage I have been a gym rat, working out around 5 days a week, so to have him join me as we joined the rec center this past fall has been beyond my wildest dreams. I love hearing about his workouts, occasionally working out side by side with him, and seeing him find something outside of intramural sports that he excels in and loves makes me so happy. Not to mention seeing him at work in an office with friends, winning office olympics and ping pong championships (so proud!), making friends with people at church and in the neighborhood as well as just being home more with our family. I also like to think our love for each other has only blossomed more as we have this newfound love of superhero movies, and I am so grateful we got an early date night this week thanks to Mike and Darsi to watch Avengers Infinity War opening night!

I love Drew so much, and I am so relieved that I have been blessed with someone who does not only celebrate me and us on the "big" holidays or celebrations but that our relationship and our love story has been built by "small and simple things", if you don't mind me borrowing that phrase. We are planning a fun adventure in the fall together, and we already have a trip planned for next month (one of my christmas presents to him) and then our first big (no diapers!) family vacation in July. There were probably a hundred thousand little decisions that brought us together in Provo Utah nearly 13 years ago, and I still can't believe he picked me. I am the luckiest. Every year has been full of surprises and I can't wait to see what year 13 will bring! (maybe I will finally figure out coding so my text doesn't have to wrap around pictures?!)

first hike the Y of 2018 was a SUCCESS!

good moods, lots of family and friends around us, and I only had to carry a boy most of the way (not both but that did happen most of the way down!)

lots of snacks=minimal whining, but we ALWAYS run out of water. Maybe we will gift all the kids their own backpack waterbottles next year??

nothing more terrifying than taking four small children really high up into the mountains and trying to keep them from falling down. my only complaint this round was we spent too much time on the top for my heart to handle!

but it was worth it to wait for everyone to make it up and join us! What a memorable end to a memorable weekend.
and we ended the evening with Cafe Rio and little d teaching Cory how to properly Floss

Grandpa Phil

Drew's maternal grandfather "Grandpa Phil" passed away this morning and while it had been a long time coming and was expected, I have just had this wonderful rush of memories and I wanted to be sure I jotted them down before I forgot.

Most of my memories are of him the first 5 years after I married Drew. Drew and I got engaged just a week or so after his wife Patsy died. I never really thought about that but the few times I met her and any time I talked to Phil about her showed that she was the absolute love of his life, and then he loses her and Drew and I get married three months later and he flew to Ohio (with Aunt Jamie!) and they were one of the few extended family members that made it out there and I never thought about how that must have been really hard for him or thanked him for being there to support us.

We visited with Grandpa Phil often those early years of marriage, since he lived in the same town as we did, me more so than Drew because I loved to hear about his theories and his view of the world. We could talk on creativity for hours and I wish I had written more of those conversations down. He inspired me and encouraged me and showed me the art he made before he decided to go to Harvard and use "his smarts" but he still had the ache of creativity and we just always resonated from the first meeting. I was so worried about him being alone with his work and his writings, in the early days of the kittens when we were finding them all homes I even brought Kevin to stay with him for a day or two to see how he liked having a pet! Needless to say, he felt Kevin was a little too high maintenance (ha!) as he would follow him around everywhere but he still loved him, so it was fitting that in the end we ended up keeping little Kevs, which Grandpa Phil was always happy to see him. Phil took Drew and I down to the town of Annabella, to show me his childhood home, which ended up being part of the inspiration to name our little lady. I will never forget how often he would take me to a corner of the room that housed his artwork, and that he was just as proud of those sculptures as he was of his Harvard Degree.

The last year or so when I was teaching and pregnant and visiting with Phil he was always working through his theories on the computer. He always had so much going on in his mind and while he would occasionally repeat a story or theory to me, he always taught me something new. I was so nervous about being a first time mom and he had so much confidence in my ability to mother and love my child while still being able to be creative. He came by to visit me just after I came home with little D and I still remember how in awe I was at him, doing something that I thought was reserved for women and mothers and grandmothers, to visit so early after a baby was born but he was just like that, so sensitive to needs and full of love and concern and wanting to care for others,
All these photos are from my other blog, another reason I am so grateful I have been blogging all these years...it is so easy to look down memory lane when you can use search terms! Here is Gpa Phil with little d and Gpa Mike at a wedding reception just before little d turned one.
And one last picture I got before we moved out of Utah a few months later... I had such a strong relationship with him and while I knew it would change I could never have expected how much would change in such a short period of time.
I came back not quite a year later for Sarah's first marathon and we got to hang out, nothing had changed at that point and it was so much fun to see him run around with little d!

 THIS.
Grandpa Phil gave some of the best hugs.
Fast forward a few years (2013) and I brought little A to visit her great grandpa for the first time. We still visited but I suspected that something was changing with him. It was hard and I had a pretty rough grieving process after this trip, knowing that old age or a stroke or something had taken away a huge part of the Phil I knew and loved. He had no idea what theories I wanted to talk about with him but he kept telling me he knew I was his favorite because we had creative minds.... it was a relief to see that his heart was still there.
The twins got to meet Great Grandpa Phil when we came out for a wedding in 2016 and so much had changed. I am sure seeing so many wild and crazy kids was overwhelming but he was confused most of our quick visit, and I felt like we made him feel uncomfortable. I was so excited to see him after so many years, even after what I heard from other family members about him forgetting things, I thought for sure he would remember how he would always call my kids "geniuses" or tell Drew how much he lucked out in marrying me, that I was the best thing that happened to him. This visit was sad and it was my last with him, although at the time I thought it was because we would not be back in Utah. But the truth is, we came back but whatever he was dealing with mentally had progressed so much that I was cautioned to not visit him, and to be honest, I am grateful for that. I am grateful that 95% of my memories of him are him at his best. That while I never documented in words or photographs the hours I spent there trying to figure out the universe, someday I'll have all those memories back, just like he has them all now.
I don't know why people have to suffer so much like Phil did in those last years of his life, in what I am sure would have had to be the most excruciating way for such a sharp mind like his. But I know he is at least reunited with his beautiful wife and restored mentally to his very best state. I am grateful for his influence love and support in my life during the time in my life that I was most in need of good influences and role models and was thousands of miles away from a biological dad or grandfather. In my mind, and in what I hope to teach my children about him, he will always be a genius, an artist, a creative conglomeration of the very best in behavioral psychology as well as creative thought.

My Baby Girl at 5 years old

I am such a cheater, I am really writing this in July but I am going to go ahead and post it in April because this is the earliest I have been able to sit down for a moment and really think about my 5 year old and how much she has changed!

HERE is her 4 year recap which also includes links to the other birthdays.

Actually, don't bother reading that because it just brought me to tears! How much has changed in such a short time for our little lady. This year was the first birthday without her favorite twin besties by her side, but she spent it with her twin brothers by her side (thank you PJ masks for having a girl  and two boys!!), which I suppose was fitting that she transitioned from S&K to L&L so easily, she seems to do so well with twins <3

This morning (July 19), little A ran up into her room after I got upset with her for throwing a ball at her brother. The other day at the gym one of the workers there scolded her for kicking her brother in the privates (true story)and SHE had the biggest most tearful meltdown when I came to pick her up. She is such a sensitive little thing still, something that has carried over from the early days of breastfeeding when she would bite me and I would yelp from shock and pain and she would just burst into tears. Lan has been such a handful (like 24-7) that I do no feel like I have been parenting her (or any of my other kids for that matter) too well the last few months... I have been neck deep in damage control with that lovely 3rd child of mine. But it is good to sit back and reflect on the last year.

Baby girl finished her online with prek with flying colors! we got gold medals every month (sometimes multiple!) except for the last month, May, we got silver because, well, I just got lazy. That means that she was on this program online for 20 minutes a day for 5 days a week, no matter what, all school year!! Such a feat for a little one... some days were easier than others but on the whole she knows her numbers and letters so well (and letter sounds!) and has started on the path of reading, which is so exciting.

I mentioned at 4 that she was rarely napping for me... same holds true now. She will sleep in if she needs to (the only one of my kids to ever do that, although Lo has done it a little recently!), and prefers to stay up late, hanging out in her room and doing any number of things. She got a calendar from my mom for Christmas and loves when I put events on her calendar and crosses off the day each night! She's learned months and seasons and days of the week from her prek and looks forward to fridays/the weekend when we re-paint our nails in preparation for sunday! She had such a good birthday, which she so graciously (and happily!) shared with L&L. Anna coming out and giving her pink hair was one of the biggest highlights of the birthday week!
coloring and painting nails are probably two of her favorite pasttimes. I got her a nail art book with a tool that she loves looking through and carefully selecting what she wants from it. It sure beats the days of all one solid color nails!
Hard to believe this was just a few months ago at christmas... she looks so different and so much older now!
while she cannot replace S&K, little a has found a good little tribe of girlies on our street... and still loves to hang out with the boys too!

Coloring inside the lines has been the biggest accomplishment for her... she loves to draw pictures of people with lovely long eyelashes and long hair and dresses too!

her little buddy at church who "is named after my dad" (not really, but he does share the same name!)
I think she has the SMIZE down
and that hair just keeps on growing... lipstick/chapsticks are still all the rage. Anna gave her like 10 chapsticks in a little tin for christmas and it is still one of her favorite things!
Since little d went back to school last fall, she really took the reigns in her Big Sister role (which she neglected over the summer, ha!)
 She's still our "CHARR-RIOS" girl

sweet girl who loves everyone so hard... she still occasionally cries about how much she misses her granny!
love love love how much she loves her big brother
 she's changed so much!!!
She just keeps growing and glowing and loves everything pink and rainbow and wonder woman and princess and superhero and books and shimmer and shine! She's still so picky, as the little carb-queen of the house, and sticks to her favorite foods: strawberries, tortillas, bread, bagels, cheerios, etc. I can't believe half my kids I can now do birthday questionnaires...no better time to start than this year!

I love you so much my baby girl! and for the record, as promised, she will always be my baby girl, "Even when I have babies and make you a grandma" as she says so eloquently!
