to do before #2

Also known as "I think I'm going crazy for the next 5.5 weeks", not to be done in any particular order.

I am hoping for a VBAC (as long as A is doing okay and we don't have a repeat of little d's trauma), but planning (just in case) for a c-section and being basically MIA from life for 6 weeks. Okay, so really only 4 (since I was back at work last time around at 4 weeks). My hospital is an hour away from our current home, and my inlaws is the convenient halfway point, so that is where little d will be staying for the 2-5 days I have to stay at the hospital, depending on what happens.

1. Make 20 freezer meals (for crockpot) in ziplock bags
2. Stash of my favorite recipes/meals in an easy to manage organization
3. Pack my hospital bag
4. Pack little d's overnight bag
5. Get a catsitter for KG
6. Come up with a basic grocery list
7. Buy little d more pants
8. Buy a changing table
9. Deep clean my car's interior
10. Deep clean my house
11. Dreft all the 0-6 month clothes and baby blankets
12. Read "Wicked"
13. Finish reading "Articles of Faith"
14. Work on some sewing projects to become better acquainted and more comfortable with my sewing machine
15. Make little d a "Big Brother" kit (gifts from his sister)
16. Buy a Belly Bandit
17. Organize the shoes in our closet
18. Recover the infant car seat
19. Make a stash of elastic band skirts (to match the bazillion onesies I have for her)
20. Deep clean all baby bottles and pump parts.

If I do 4 a week it shouldn't be too bad, right?

My why a difference 12 pounds makes

6 weeks to go! I can still boot camp it with the best of them... Burpees and abs can still be a pain (not literally, mom, don't worry) but at least push-ups are much easier when you only have to go down like four inches before your belly gets in the way. Hopefully six weeks from today, A will let me get in one last boot camp class in before her big birth day!

Weekend recap

Remaking mr. D's birthday cake (this time with the proper ratio of Reese's to everything else), attending a beautiful baptism, catching up on the Friend and with some friends, and the view from here. I felt super productive Friday since we had a lot going on this weekend and as a result I'm exhausted today.

I'm Counting my blessings it's already naptime. I only have six more weeks to catch up on all the sleep I missed while sick, so I'm on a bit of a tight schedule. Maybe my energy will return when I stop eating coco puffs for lunch?

Has it really been a week?

It feels like an eternity ago that my family came to visit, maybe because it was such a quick little whirlwind or maybe because it happened to fall on mr. D's birthday, but whatever the reason it was a wonderful visit. I am so so grateful that while many miles still separate us, it is only a 12 hour drive and not a cross country flight that brings us back together. I love talking with my parents and seeing DK hang out with little d. I get such a sense of déjà vu with little d sometimes when I think back to almost 14 years ago when I was taking care of DK like he was my baby. I couldn't stop photographing him then, trying to capture every moment I could at the expense of all the Kodak film in my parents possession. I suppose I'm no different now. Love these guys.

Third trimester

The third trimester feels once again like an eternal "can I really be any bigger/more uncomfortable/tired than I am right now?" And with each passing day the answer is almost always yes. As I near my "six weeks left" mark this upcoming Tuesday, everything is getting a little more real. I've gone from "nothing fits me right" to "even my husbands tshirts look foolish on me and what on earth will I wear to church for six more times?!" In the course of the last three weeks.

Thankfully, mercifully (knock in wood) this nasty cold is finally leaving our family and the last two nights when I only had to get up to go to the bathroom once in the middle of the night (and didn't die drowning in mucus related coughing), I realized I had not been so happy in weeks. I can breathe, I can work out again, and I am savoring and treasuring my family's good health at the moment, however long it lasts. I still have a nagging cough three weeks later but it's nothing close to what I had been dealing with.

My to do list is shrinking of things that need to be done before A comes and growing in things I would really like to do before I am otherwise entangled in new motherhood again. So life is good and unless you are little d's height and have the unfortunate view of the underside of my belly that cannot stay covered no matter how hard I try, you'd guess I was simply hiding one of little d's giant playground balls in my shirt. I am convinced that Small torsos never make good homes for babies, but hopefully the growing discomfort of the next six and a half weeks will lead into some serious delight when I do eventually go into labor.

Home stretch, baby.

little d at 2.5 years +1 month

Someone is finally growing in his two year molars! It's about time. They are sneaking through his little gums and it is so much fun to see him looking at the "new molars" in the mirror, and make sure to brush them so they don't get cavities. Between that and his bronchitis the last few weeks (which left his poor stuffed nose worse for the wear), we are super lucky that his sleep has not suffered too much. Only a handful of times has his nap gone for only or just over an hour, most days it is about two hours. He goes to bed between 8 and 9, usually singing to himself or just saying "bless you" to Mr. D's and my coughing until he falls asleep, which usually takes at least 30 minutes but has been known to take over an hour. He has only ever skipped three naps in his whole toddler life, and one of them occurred in the last month. He still wakes up at 6:30 am like clockwork, calling my name and typically staying in his bed until I come to get him and we chat for awhile before he feels like getting out of bed. I love this little routine, and he does it for post-naptime, too.

Everything gets turned into a song. most of his songs are mashups of what he is doing or wants to do and songs he knows, typically primary songs or take me out to the ballgame. he sings in the car (and requests the radio is turned off so he can sing to me), before bed, as he is eating, in the tub, ALL the time. I love it. It's hilarious and endearing and I hope it never ends. Unfortunately he is also terribly camera shy lately so it takes a lot of coaxing to sneak a picture or video of him lately, hence why I have yet to get this on camera.

Little d is able to play on his own now! I never thought this would happen since he mostly likes playing sports and there are few sports that can be done with one person, but lately while I have been showering or cooking or otherwise occupied, I hear him moving stuff around, singing and talking, in his own little world. He is always more than delighted to play with me or his dad, but it is nice to not have to be constantly throwing new toys or game ideas at him all day, he can do some of that on his own.

Polite to a fault. LOVE it.  Since  we have all been sick, little d has taken to saying "bless you" everytime someone not only sneezes but also coughs. Which the latter has been extremely frequent, and even in his bedroom (while we think he is sleeping), he does not skip a beat.... "Bwess you!" and he fully expects a thank you, after which he will reply "you're welcome! love you." Sometimes he has done this in his sleep, but most of the time it has been a good predictor for when exactly he falls asleep (that's how we know its usually 30-60 minutes after we put him to bed). He also likes to make a lot of noise since he sleeps next to the wall and will practice drumming his hands or feet against the wall until he gets bored. He has finally gotten into somewhat of a routine of eating only at the table, saying his pleases and thank yous, and (my personal favorite) complimenting me on the yummy meal and asking "mayibe 'scused?". Sure, he has his wild, can't-get-him-to-sit-still-for-sive-minutes-at-mealtimes moments, but as long as I keep snacks to a minimum, he happily comes to the table ready to sit and eat with us. He has also taken to calling people (myself included), "mister sir" when he is requesting something and "come on/lets go, boys!" whenever he is talking to a group of people.

We finally brought over the crib from my inlaws house and I set it up in my room. I was a little worried little d (who was terribly attached to his crib) would regress and want to go in it since he only made the switch to his new bed not even three months ago, but he has done wonderfully. He happily shows guests his sister's new bed when they come to visit, and even told me how much he liked the new chevron bedding I got for her ("dat's nice, mom. good job. looks great." with a thumbs up).

"I can't know." This is his way of saying I don't know or remember and he uses this phrase frequently. Mr. D always corrects him, but I think it's adorable, just a phase, and probably won't last till next month. I really find it fascinating how he puts phrases together and tries to figure out tenses.

One of my favorite parts of the day (which if I am lucky happens more than once a day) is when little d decides to play with Kevs on the stairs, the only carpeted area of our home. This usually involves him throwing a cat toy up the stairs and Kevs batting it back down to him. Little d is not always nice to Kevs (and will still kick him in the face or push him at random, which I still don't get) so to see this little playfulness is really endearing.

I was making some little bookmark-style things for valentines the other day and had a little extra paper so I made an extra one for little d. Upon receiving it, he replied, "Awwww! That's so nice! Thank you mom!" and proceeded to put it up on the fridge and give me a hug. There are so many moments in my day where my heart feels like it's going to explode and that was certainly one of them.

He's a total show-off. It's not enough for me to watch him dance or kick a balloon around, though. He has me expose my belly so his sister can watch and will intermittently rush over, mid-play, and say to my belly "did you see that, A? yeah? You want me to do it again? 'Kay." and rush off, as if I didn't even exist.

After that stint at the Celtics game last month, everyone has to have a name that plays with him in sports. Basketball he is KG and I am usually Rondo while Mr. D is Paul Pierce. He also likes us to chant "DE-FENSE!" as he is trying to make a basket and will occasionally call for a "time out, wait a minute" where he sits on the floor and catches his breath. Baseball he is usually Dustin Pedroia and doesn't care who I am so long as he gets to be pitched to. He went to a high school game with the inlaws on vday and hated it because the buzzer was too loud. Let it be noted he didn't complain about the noise volume at the Garden, so maybe he just knew that KG wasn't about to show up.

He can put on and take off his clothes now. This is a pretty big accomplishment because he has been ragdolling clothes changes for awhile and with a sister on the way, it is nice, albeit bittersweet that he is able to be more independent. We also gave him his own little dresser next to his bed and moved his closet clothes to eye level, so he knows where everything is and can select accordingly.

Little d is fascinated by girl things, which I try to explain to him. Bobby pins, makeup, hair ties, headbands, nail polish, jewelry and the like are met with awe and a little bit of disappointment as he realizes they are not for him because he is a boy. But he does a pretty good job in finding those things and knowing to hand them to me. I also occasionally let him pick out a necklace for me or a color of nail polish, which he loves doing. The kid likes making decisions, and I think it makes him feel important that he is helping me make them.

Being sick the last few weeks has led to a regression in the learning stuff vs. watching too much tv (leaning heavily towards the latter), but now that we are all feeling a bit better (and the snow is slowly melting enough so short little legs can get through the backyard without faceplanting) we can hopefully find a better balance. In his defense, I did put on Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Warerabbit while we were in my bed one morning, fell asleep, and woke up over an hour later to find out he not only sat through the entire movie but really liked it and retold me the entire story I missed.

The boy loves to (re-)tell stories. This would probably drive me crazy if I was working and did not know where these stories were coming from, but at least I know that george, marco, and super why are all characters of tv shows, even if little d tells me about their adventures like they are his best friends. We need more playdates to be sure.

Potty training has never seemed so far away. We have had a little problem with lying the last month. whereas before he would tell me as soon as he went to the bathroom, lately I will ask him if he needs a diaper change and he will deny, deny, deny. Thankfully he is understanding the difference between truth and a lie, and if I ask him if he is telling the truth, he will admit to telling a lie. Thank you Super Why and the story of Pinnochio (although it took some convincing to inform little d that just because his nose wasn't growing didn't mean he was necessarily telling the truth). The boy would rather play than get a diaper change, and that is probably the biggest obstacle to his play so he ignores it. Potty training in another year it is.

Someone once told me that toddlers only work on two modes: "GO!" and "mosey along." Mosey along always occurs when we have someplace to be or when I am requesting something of him, and GO! is always only when he wants to do something that usually has no time commitment whatsoever.

Add laundry to the list of things little d likes to do with me, along with dishes and cooking. The latter two are a bit of a challenge but laundry is pretty perfect for him: throwing (sorting) clothes from one place to another is really his forte.

Running and sliding into "home" are pretty much how he gets around anywhere. Mostly because it makes people laugh.

He is enamoured with the idea of a birthday and every time I light a candle requests the birthday song so he can blow it out. He kept asking where his presents were last week when it was Mr. D's birthday, so I'm not sure he quite gets that every birthday is not his own.

Can recognize and point out diamonds, squares, triangles, circles, rectangles, stars and the letters D, R, A, B, C and the number 1. I am sure there are more he could do but he hasn't shown much interest in them lately. He likes being a doctor with his new doctor kit, and banging things with a hammer. Kid loves to make noise, especially drumming things. He's still a dance machine and comes up with all kinds of crazy dance moves that keep us entertained.

He can recite just about the entire story of the Grinch in his own words and we don't even own the book. We found the audio version that he listens to all the time on Spotify.

Mr. D is trying to get him into the Wii and I think it's working. I can't say I can complain since wiibowling is much cheaper than taking him out to bowl, and at least in the wintertime wii baseball is a little safer and easier to do indoors.

He responds to stuff he cannot believe with "WHAAAT." and it is hilarious every time.

Also his songs literally never end... I call them the "and thennnn" songs because that is how he connects his thoughts when he is singing.

I know these pictures are old but lets be honest, they are adorable and I can't believe I just found them on our camera the other day. Summertime never looked so adorable.

33 weeks pregnant with #2 and great expectations

The past two weeks have been pretty brutal. My cold went from bad to terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad-AWFUL where I was up every hour of the night coughing up who knows what,  could barely speak during the daytime and was overall exhausted. Mr. D still has a lingering cough (we all got sick roughly around the same time at the end of January), and poor little d is finally on his last doses of pink medication for his bronchitis. Fingers crossed the worst is over and we can go back to normalcy, instead of my daytime pajama-wear, not necessarily showering daily, and general disregard for anything and everything of importance. Lack of sleep and structure (working out at the gym) will do that to me. Not to mention being hit with a storm of false labor contractions as a result of all the intense coughing.

Between the mucus buildup in my body, and the growing fetus inside of my body, most nights during the multiple times I woke up I felt completely suffocated. While waking up EVERY SINGLE hour one night, and feeling completely exhausted and generally crappy the next day (not to mention unmotivated to do anything), I got to thinking, "Why me? Why now?" and it struck me... the 31 weeks prior in my pregnancy, I had been nonstop go-go-go and while I was getting bigger, I was still able to do 99.9% of what I was doing before I got pregnant. Picking up a toddler? No problem. Hauling 20 bags of groceries in one shot? No big deal. This cold was (in my opinion), the only way that I was possibly going to slow down a bit. Not that it prevented me from doing a little crazy nesting, but overall it was a good taste of what life was going to be like in two months.

Fast forward to today. All the coughing and contracting has my ribcage hurting in a way only a waaaay too-tight bra can compare (again, a suffocating feeling), and I am pretty sure that I pulled a muscle right below my left ribcage during my prenatal valentine massage, which still makes lifting certain things a little painful. I can't carry little d every time he requests it... most days I can't manage to carry him at all. And of course the latter bothers me the most of all because that is what I was hoping to prolong by working out so much. I wanted to be able to do everything for my toddler so that he wouldn't notice a difference, but the fact is, I AM changing and our family will be changing very soon and I need to let him grow up a little. As much as I love holding him or snuggling him on my lap, I am running out of space in my frontside/lap! Kisses, hugs, and bellyrubs will have to do for now.

Now about those great expectations.
I had a few ladies at the gym tell me how they are "sooooo excited" to see me post-baby because they just "know" how quickly I will be back to my normal self. Um that's when it's a good thing that I moved to a new ward, neighborhood and gym when 5 months pregnant, I suppose... because they don't know what the "before" is supposed to look like. I, however, do, and unfortunately also happen to be my own biggest critic (aren't we all?). So here's how it went down the last go-around.

I had a c-section. Came home after a week in the hospital weighing just as much as when I went in, super bloated and uncomfortable. Two weeks later I finally manned up enough to weigh myself and was delighted to see a 20 pound weight loss, especially after not doing anything for the last three weeks. Week 4 hit and I was getting antsy, but realizing I needed two more weeks to fully recover I waited to hit the gym until week 6, per doctor's orders. Coming back into the gym and onto the treadmill was worse than I expected. Like, 20 minute miles and I was exhausted. Thankfully with a little prodding from some family members, I "ran" a 6k at about 10 weeks post partum and felt pretty awesome about the fact that I (1) didn't die, and (2) didn't stop moving till I crossed the finish line. I dropped all the baby weight right around 8 months postpartum, which coincided with when I stopped pumping, and as a result of continuing to eat like I was nursing, I gained 5-10 pounds that stuck with my until after the marathon at just shy of 2 years postpartum, when I got my nutrition back on track and was finally back to my pre-pregnancy weight again...for a few weeks until I started gaining weight due to pregnancy #2. I could say that I was working full time during the first year and that was why I didn't lose the weight faster, but the fact is that I planned out working out (and was pretty diligent at it at least 4 days a week at 5 am!) and didn't plan out the nutrition properly.

This time around, I feel a little bit more knowledgeable in the nutrition sector, if for no other reason than I have a toddler who I am trying to be a good example for (and whatever I eat, typically he ends up eating). Which will hopefully come in handy since my brother in law has decided to get married just barely six weeks after Little A is due. Umm.... kind of a big deal. I know these pictures will turn into Christmas card fodder and the fact that I will most likely have to be in them is a bit of a challenge. Thankfully, I will have a six week old I will be proudly toting (and nobody had better take her away from me) in front of my sure-to-be-still-bulging belly, so for now that is my main strategy for not looking like a big white whale next to my tanned, waif-like, soon-to-be-sister-in-law. As much as I want to just "bounce back" to the gym, I know that just like going from no children to one, the one to two adjustment will be just as hard, if not harder because I have two littles to take up my time and energy.

So to answer the question I am sure you are dying to ask, yes I have big expectations for myself. I would like to lose all the weight I have gained before I turn 28 in November, not to mention to tone up and start training for a marathon to run in early 2014. But I am not a celebrity and do not have a personal chef and nanny and trainer so these things may take a big longer than I am anticipating. But what I am going to focus on is soaking up every moment of those first six weeks where instead of workouts and weight loss I will be enjoying all my time with my children and making sure they become the best of friends, with me and their dad as well as each other. Not being employed outside the home and having my inlaws nearby will hopefully allow me time to count my blessings, and maybe even get a shower in every other day. Springtime is all about rebirth, which is something that I found terribly appealing in having an April baby.

While there is still so much I worry about, like will she.... (be allergic to Kevs, cry a lot, have reflux, not weigh enough, not nurse well, not take a bottle at all, always want to be held, etc).... at least I know one thing for certain is to expect the unexpected. And to celebrate the little victories. Which is why I will be (much to my astonishment, I am sure) photographing myself in the same bikini I used to document my pre-baby weight, right after birth, and then every 7 weeks after that. I regretted not doing something similar last time (even just for myself) because even though people around me saw changes, I did not... I couldn't enjoy my post-partum progress because I was too wrapped up in comparing myself to the person I was before I got pregnant. So this time around I will be celebrating the little victories, regardless of how long it takes to get to my ultimate goal. Maybe I will share the pictures, and maybe I won't, but either way I know I can use it as a measuring stick for myself, and hopefully inspire others to take pregnancy and post-partum-dom as a challenge instead of an excuse. Because what fun is life if we don't challenge ourselves every once in awhile?

The above swimsuit pic was when I was 7 weeks along, and on the right with 7 weeks remaining.

+27 this week... I cannot begin to imagine how uncomfortable that +40 was at this time back in 2010. Yeesh.

Making some cake pops

I was super excited when my little brother got me a cake pop set for Christmas, since it was something I always wanted to try and make. Turns out the baking was a bit of a challenge for me, but I've found if you dunk anything in enough chocolate and Heath bar crunch it looks and tastes awesome. Behold.

Two weeks two days since I last stepped foot in the gym

Man, does it feel good to be back. Still on mucinex, toting tissues and water around like its my job. Feeling pretty super after my power lifting class. Only 7 weeks to get this body in tip top shape for birthing a healthy baby girl!

Kron family weekend is going by far too quickly for my liking

Little d is going to be heartbroken. I think he speaks for all of us. It's been fun to have my parents and DK visit us, even if it is for less than 48 hours. We will take what we can get (and hope the summer visit is a bit longer!!)

Thursday, February 14, 2013

To my baby girl,

I wrote your big brother a letter at 31 weeks so I am a little behind but I wanted to still share some of my thoughts with you. You have got to be one of the luckiest girls ever... Coming into our little family where you will certainly be adored, fawned over and fiercely cared for by your parents, big brother, and extended family members. Your big brother was blessed to have his aunts and uncles nearby for the better part of his first year of life, and you have the privilege of both grandparents within a day's drive.

I was terrified to think that I was going to have a little girl. Terrified, mixed of course with elation in thinking about little painted toenails, pierced ears, shopping trips, and cute little girly outfits. Growing up as a teenager there was such a monstrosity of things that concerned me: modesty, dating, "mean girls", bullying, eating disorders... the list could go on forever. I thought those things were bad when I was young and then teaching high school a few years after graduating, I was shocked to see how much worse the world had become. I feel so blessed to have met your father at the ripe young age of 19, which I think without a shadow of a doubt was done to protect me from so many evils of the world. He is an enormous blessing in my life, as I am sure you will find out, and has helped me to become the sort of mother and wife I could only dream to be. I never worried about your little brother growing up to be like his dad, but it scares me to think of a little "mini me" looking up to me. Would I be able to be up to the task? There were quite a few nights before I found out you would be my baby girl that I laid awake in bed, crying, fearful for the future and what kind of example I could possibly be. I had my mind completely set that I could only have sons, that I would not be strong enough to raise a daughter.

Then I did something I should have done right when I started feeling those little inklings of fear and doubt: I said a prayer. Within minutes, I knew.  I knew Heavenly Father had prepared you for me and me for you these last few years that you were willing and ready to greet this world head-on.  You will have something I never had and always wished I did: a big brother to protect you. And that is why no matter how big my shortcomings seem, between he and your dad, they will easily make up for my weaknesses. Of course there will be many mistakes and heartbreaks along the way, but as long as I do my very best in raising you in the gospel, I know I have no need to fear.

You are coming into our lives at quite an exciting time in our little family's existence. Your brother is counting down the days until he gets to meet you, we live in a new state in a new home than when we did when we had your brother. Where we will be in a year from now, only time will tell but for now I am content in knowing that you and your brother and your father will be by my sides and that is all that matters in this life to me.

I can't wait till you get here. As hard as it is, thinking about sharing my life with someone in addition to your father and your brother, who are my entire world right now, I think you and I will get along just fine. There is truly something to be said for the bond between mothers and daughters. I can only hope you will be healthy, happy, and that we can do all within our power to make way for the presence of our little daughter of God. I can already tell you are going to be such a special part of our lives, and an essential component to our family.

I love you more that I can even say, from the moment I saw that plus sign to the moment I first felt you kicking me, to the moment I first saw your lovely face and dainty fingers, my love for you has continued to blossom. I am so grateful and feel so blessed to have you as my daughter. Now keep cooking for two more months and we can both hope your labor and delivery is a little bit less eventful (and stressful) than your brother's.

54 more days!

Be mine valentine

Seeing as how mr. D's birthday falls the day after valentines, it always seemed wrong to make a big deal out of it until last year when he was on a business trip and I spent the day with my other valentine, little d. I resolved last year to make valentines more of a "love free for all" instead of a couples holiday... Isn't that what our anniversary is for? :) to start off the day, I filled little d's room with red pink and white balloons. What a hit! He instantly understood that today was a special day, and spent a good 30 minutes kicking them around. We made our valentine box last night so today we had our heart shaped (leftover from winter storm nemo) pancakes, finished valentines for dad and kevs, and headed over to the church for a tri ward play date party, smoot nacks (fruit snacks) valentines in hand. It was a blast. Heart shaped pb&js are the way to go.

Little d is at his grandparents house the rest of the day while I go to yet another doctors appointment, get a much needed massage (thank you mr. D!) and meet up for a nice, child free dinner to celebrate mr. d's big 2-9 at Capitol grille (since who knows if I will be up for an anniversary dinner 3 weeks after having a baby?!).

Having kids, I must say, while it has its challenges, things like holidays are SO much more fun!!
