It took me three hours to get both kids into bed asleep last night. Little d kept lamenting on how super hungry he was so he got to eat a sandwich and prolong naptime by 45 minutes and little a was just not having bedtime so she ended up falling asleep in the swing. I think I got a total of six hours last night/ this morning in 10, 45 or 90 minute increments ;)
After she got up at 4:30 an he got up at 5:30, I decided she was going back in the swing (love that thing!!) and little d got all access to my phone (which he never gets so he was all over it!) so that meant an hour or so of me sleeping, little d watching PBS kids next to me, and little a doing who knows what in her swing but when I got up she was happy and awake and looking at her mobile. She's such a good baby.
To battle the mommy guilt from sleeping in, I gave in to making pancakes for little d. An hour and three tantrums later we were getting ready for the gym and my mil had come in to watch baby girl while we were gone. Boot camp went fabulously, everything was much easier than I remembered/thought it would be, I came home and showered while little d played outside with his grandma, and here I am after lunch, alone with my sleeping baby doll girl while little d gets a sleepover at his grandparents house tonight.
In conclusion, while last night was rough and i missed just the emotional support o mr. d greatly, I am super blessed to have an amazing set of inlaws who are close by and capable of filling my needs.
Seriously so blessed. Now to take kevs to the vet to check out the nasty cut/bite he's been aggressively cleaning the last two days...

Hold me closer tiny dancer
He's still a total wild child but gosh does he love his sister. He calls this her princess outfit, and my favorite thing is when he calls her "missy miss".

Soaking up the last bits of our weekend
Seven years of marriage! Time flies when you're having fun... Two gorgeous children, three states (Utah Ohio Massachusetts) and a couple job changes later, we are still very happy and very much in love. I'm Counting our many blessings today. Mostly captured in the faces of our Littles, a boy who looks just like his dad and a gorgeous girl who resembles her big brother so much.
I am a happy happy girl. I cannot wait to see what the next year holds for us.

The training wheels are coming off
I've been spoiled for two weeks with my sister and mom here to hold my hand. I've been catching up on sleep mostly and don't know if anyone can rightly say they are "ready" to tackle being outnumbered by their tiny tots but we have collected a pretty good stash of treats so I suppose let the bribery begin. I miss you mom!

Profiles
I've never been much for my own profile, but from the first ultrasound of each of my children I completely fell in love with their sweet cheeks, button nose, and lovely lips. It's hard to imagine one child looking more like me or like their dad when they look so much like each other. Little d was looking at some baby pictures of himself and was completely convinced they were of his sister.
On another unrelated note, I went to the gym this morning after a 13 day hiatus. I only walked on the treadmill and attempted some baby weights to feel things out, see how my body is doing. I feel great and managed 20 push-ups before I got too tired. It's amazing how easy those sorts of things are to do (namely squats) without a 35 pound bowling ball in my midsection. Ill be back tomorrow but still taking it easy. Little d is just happy to see his old pals again.
I have a number in mind that I'd love to hit before the wedding in four weeks but if not, I'm just happy to be rid of half the baby weight at this point without too much work on my part, and still managing to eat baby girls weight in chocolate cake and all sorts of delicious goodies friends have brought over. We still have leftovers from when people have been bringing us meals so at least for the next few days I can enjoy not eating pb&js and easy Mac on a daily basis. Also bought my skirt for the wedding a size too small in hopes that I can make it fit in a month... If not ill just exchange it for the next size up. I'm getting excited for our little trip to the Carolina's in a few weeks!

Naptime
Having had my sister and now my mom here, we have managed all but one day to nap little d and baby girl at roughly the same time, giving me a desperately needed 30-90 minute nap. Seriously so lucky, I know. The most redeeming part of this for me has been that my mom and sister have both needed that nap as much as I did... Making me feel not so lame for always being exhausted chasing after little d all day before I had little a. 6am always comes too quickly and boy that kid is like the energizer bunny he keeps going and going and going... Fingers crossed his sister can manage to keep up with him.
Also my mom will probably kill me for posting this picture. But I thought it was cute and my dad would like it so here it goes. Four more days till the training wheels come off and after a morning shopping I'm still baffled by how one can I about with a toddler and Breastfeeding infant in tow. The next few weeks and months will certainly be interesting and I think a big learning curve for me.

Happy 11 days postpartum.
I feel really good.... did all that craziness really happen only 11 days ago?
Three hours of church followed by three hours prepping a meal for my family, in laws and the missionaries. Even with help from my mom and mr. d, Baby girl and I are pooped out.
but surviving today goes to show I may be ready for the gym before this month is through ;)

Boston strong
This is the second Saturday in a row I have not been able to run; Saturdays are usually my favorite day to run and today would have been perfect weather... Alas my body and mind are not in quite the same place and while I feel confident my body will eventually catch up, not being able to bust out even one mile when so many friends are doing 13 or 26 is a little frustrating.
So while I can't celebrate the strength of this great city in the way I really want to, for the first time in two months I can wear my marathon shirt from last year and my favorite pair of workout pants.
Boson strong.

Sisters are awesome
While one sister who shall not be named is up to her neck studying for finals 2000ish miles away and we won't get to see her for at least a few weeks or months more, Anna took a week off work (kind of a big deal for a workaholic like her!), flew out here and played mommy to little d for the week. She's played a million games of baseball, made me foccacia bread from scratch, cleaned my dishes, and has managed not to go totally crazy with my out of whack hormones all over the place. She very well could have gone into Boston for some investigative reporting and been able to catch a glimpse of our favorite silver fox Anderson cooper (like her TV station wanted her to do) but she chose to play with a two year old from 6am to 8pm all day every day. Good to know im not the only one who finds toddlerhood exhausting!! Anna is awesome.
We will miss her like crazy!! So grateful my mom comes in today to lessen the tears.

Happy mom
When I became a mom two years nine months ago, I knew things were going to be different but I never realized how much my life would change. My "free time" was suddenly nearly non existent and there was always something to do. Working full time in addition to that made for some easily avoidable frustrations... I was trying to do everything except for doing things for myself. This led to some seriously difficult months.
I have learned since then that I need a few things to keep myself happy daily: time to read scriptures, go to the gym and take a shower. That's it. If nothing else is accomplished in my day but those three things, it's been a good day.
Since having my second baby, the gym thing has gone out the window for a few weeks so I've been thinking about what else I can do to keep myself happy and it occurred to me that I haven't really taken good care of pampering myself since I came home from the hospital.
So I've decided to add a little something to my "list", something I will commit myself to doing once a week, that would make me very happy: to "pamper" myself on a Friday or Saturday... To pluck my eyebrows, put on a little mascara, shave my legs, wear something that is not workout clothes, paint my nails and even (gasp!) do my hair if I have the time. This all being with the hope that mr. D won't be too embarrassed to take me out of the house, for a weekend date but also so that at least one day a week I can really feel good about myself. Sure it's a little selfish, but if it makes this mama (who probably has some sort of stain on her shirt within minutes of putting it on) of two happy, it can't be too wrong, right?
Oh right and a few cupcakes for date night won't hurt either ;)

little A at 1 week old and little d at 2 years 9 months
Incredible how quickly a week goes by. Little A has certainly graced our home and our hearts with her little sweet spirit. I was so worried after little d that any other child would be so ugly in comparison to my darling boy, but we sure hit the jackpot twice and ended up with two gorgeous happy children. Do we dare chance it a third time?? Only time will tell. Certainly not in the near future.
Her cries are like a little piglet sometimes (but an endearing one!) and her coos and hiccups are just about the sweetest sounds a mama can desire to hear. It is hard to imagine that with little d, we were just starting to get settled in at home at this point in his life, while little A and I have been at home almost six days. She was definitely a little sleepyhead (except for the party hours of 10pm to 2 am which for her seem to be "can't stop don't stop peeing/pooping/eating" hours) the first week and only in the last day has shown more signs of alertness in between feeding and sleeping. Overall she is a content baby and gives us the loveliest smiles. She is hardly ever without a bow in her hair, although I have caved and let her wear pants only because she looks so stinking good in them. It is fun to dress her each morning, even if she requires multiple changes a day sometimes. She is giving little d a run for his money on the pooping and peeing... she poops so much! And while little d peed on me maybe a handful of times by the time he was a year old, little A has peed on me at least once a day since being born! (not to mention the meconium that erupted within minutes of me holding her for the first time). Ah, motherhood.
We tried tummy time for the first time today and she was actually pretty interested in it for a few minutes. She is quite curious and I love watching those big blue eyes looking around at the big world around her. She is quite smothered with love and affection by her dad and brother, although the latter is still adjusting to the big change of having his sister out of my tummy.
He is fine with me holding and feeding little A, but when it comes to my sister Anna holding her, he usually panics, saying stuff like "she's going to cry! she's hungry! give her to mom!" and has more than once requested to have little A sit in another room while we eat a meal in the kitchen or for Mr. D to give her to mom so he can sit on his lap. He's even tried to assert his control on Kevs, who while being largely ignored has enjoyed much more time outside (by his choice!), but when he does want to come in little d throws a big fit insisting that he stay inside. When he does come near his sister though, little d is nothing but cuddles and wanting to cover her up with blankets and tickle her nose or kiss her head... so I think I did a good job preparing him for his sister. He obviously loves her, it has just been an adjustment for everyone. It will be interesting in a week from Monday when it is just me and the Littles, no mom or sister or husband to help.
Little d has been interested in superheroes lately in addition to his usual interest in All Things Sports. The easter bunny got him spiderman and captain america figurines and he adores them, wearing his superman and spiderman shirts every. single. day. Yeah, I've been doing a load of laundry about every three days to keep up with that demand but it makes him excited to change out of his beloved PJ's each morning.
He has been super talkative and also not lately... throwing some wild temper tantrums over the smallest things (mostly not listening and then being sent to time out or something similar) or mumbling jibberish and expecting me to understand what he is saying. To say he has been wildly disobedient in the last week would probably be an understatement. He's his own man and will do what he wants, that's his motto. Thankfully Anna has been good to help quell some of the tantrums (which I think stem from the craziness of me being in the hospital for three days) and day by day he is getting better. I am excited to start more of a routine with him again, and get him to the gym, park, playgroups and library on a regular basis so he can get some of that craziness out. :) Thankfully even when he acts out and screams or kicks or hits, he is always super remorseful about it afterwards, and extra affectionate to make up for it. I have been bribing him more than usual and he is getting to watch more shows than usual, but I will just have to brush aside that mommy guilt for at least a month while I adjust to life with two.
Little d's learning stuff by leaps and bounds. He recognizes letters in his name, and most of the other letters in the alphabet (when he is focused). He learned how to snap the other day with both hands and since we gave him the camera has been getting quite good at taking pictures. He loves swinging in the backyard and Anna taught him to hoist himself onto the swing as well as to pump his legs to go higher. I am amazed daily by how much he is learning and absorbing. The hardest day this month was certainly marathon monday when we were glued to the TV all afternoon and evening... you would have thought little d was going to lose his mind! He was so upset that we wouldn't watch one of his shows and just wanted to see where the "bad guys" were that Spiderman was going to get. Baseball is still his favorite sport now that we can play outside he can play for hours, hitting balls and then running the bases (but only if you are trying to chase him to tag him out).
He loves making his own decisions and talks frequently and intelligently about good and bad choices. Hence the clothing selection, and this morning he chose to eat easy mac with a hot dog for breakfast. Go figure. We made muffins yesterday, meaning Anna and I hovered while assisting his measuring and mixing and scooping and he really did phenomenally. We've been lucky enough to have meals from friends this week and he has eaten vegetarian chili, chicken parm, and a bunch of other "adult" foods I was surprised he was so willing to try. He really impresses me sometimes, although in the days since my hospital stay there are some family/mealtime/manners rules he has selectively unlearned and we are just now starting to get those back.
I was really worried as to how he would respond to my breast-feeding his sister. He knows I can't run around with him because of my "boo-boo" (he took one look at my linea negra and sad looking bellybutton and immediately had some serious compassion on me!) but I wasn't sure how I was going to get around having to nurse around the clock and cover up in front of him. So I didn't. And while he asked questions about it, he is completely fine with it and seems to understand that that is how his sister gets food and so I can nurse comfortably around him and he doesn't freak out.
Overall, little d is a doll. He is fun to run around with and I cannot wait until I am healed enough so we can go back to our walks down to the lake and feeding the ducks and fish, or running around the mall looking for floorlights we can jump over. It is funny that I worried so much about how a baby would change our relationship, because it has. But in a good way, it has made me appreciate the consistency and routine and everything about little d at this incredible stage in his life. Comparing him to his sister, it is really a miracle how much can happen in just three years of life at that young age: he learned to crawl, eat, walk, talk, run, and developed this amazing personality whereas only 2 years 9 months ago he was just a little blob sitting on a log.
I love being a mom to two kids. While my family may not be completed yet, it feels complete for now and I feel my Savior's presence in my life much more than I have ever felt before. I am not the perfect mom but I have been blessed with an abundance of patience and energy even despite the lack of sleep I've been getting that I try not to think about. I am counting my blessings each day I see their adorable little faces, even if they are little early risers and I am barely awake and conscious while they are raring and ready to go for the day. They will not be this small and innocent and love me so unconditionally as they do now for very long and I am trying to soak up every moment the best I can. I know this will be much harder when Mr. D goes on trips and it is just me and the kids alone without help but my motto through this pregnancy and labor and postpartum has been that through the Lord I can accomplish great things. I can do anything I set my mind to do so long as he is by my side.
___________________________________on another (more personal, post-partum recovery) note.....
I just wanted to document for myself (and maybe my sisters, in case I forget! Since I did with my C-section) what recovery has been like, post VBAC. The first 24 hours were pretty brutal, I was SUPER swollen down there and in a LOT of pain, mostly from the contracting of my uterus but also from the stitches. I has second degree tearing which I didn't know what it was at the time but from the looks on the doctor's faces while they were stitching me up it was pretty bad. I couldn't even close my legs for days, the swelling was so bad and my pads were packed with ice to give me some momentary relief.
I will admit that going into labor I was most concerned about bleeding a lot and losing pregnancy weight. Ha! How quickly those two things jumped to the bottom of my list immediately after having each child. I only bled heavily (with blood clots) while in the hospital each time, and by the time I made it home it was lighter than most of my periods, so not a concern at all. This time, sitting on a donut pillow every where I went because of stitches and hemmroids (gross but true) was definitely a challenge, but it beat having to be hunched over in pain over a scar that went slicing though my midsection. I was super terrified to use the bathroom for a few days but now that I am mostly off medication and eating normally it is no longer a concern. Sneezing and coughing still terrify me.
I can still sort of flex my abdominals and immediately after labor put on my Belly Bandit and have been wearing it ever since. It really helps with my back support and for me not to feel like my belly is falling out of my pants and is actually really comfortable. I did have to hand wash it and let it air dry a few days ago and use the cheaper crappier alternate that I had from the last pregnancy and I could not believe what a HUGE difference it made comfort-wise! No wonder I never wanted to wear a belly wrap after little d, it was NOT comfortable! The Belly Bandit Bamboo material may have set me back $70 but at least it feels good and natural and I usually forget I am even wearing it. I take it off for maybe 20 minutes a day while I shower and even with dried milk on it it still feels good against my skin.
So now a week later I am actually feeling pretty good. I am not used to taking it easy but I figured I would really try to listen to the nurses orders and not to do any housework for two weeks...at least not till mom leaves next week. I keep reminding myself that the more time I allow my body to heal the quicker it will heal. I have been lucky that little d will still nap and I have been able to coordinate their napping schedules to get in a nap myself nearly every day. My ankles are still swollen but not as badly as when I first came home, and wearing sneakers and regular clothes has really helped me feel better about this whole recovery process. I am not a patient person and would give anything to be able to run around and do all the things I was able to do even at nine months pregnant, but I know that everything has a time and a season and at least for one more week it is not my time or season to be supermom. Having help has been glorious, from my husband sister and inlaws and I am so appreciative of everything they do... it also helps me realize how much I actually do!
Hopefully this time next week I can manage to sit without a donut. That's all I really want. I was back at full time work within three weeks of my c-section and hope that two weeks will be enough time for my body to heal itself this time around. I am so terribly grateful for everything that my body has gone through and while it may still have a ways to go, it is beautiful and incredible and I am thankful every day to have had the opportunity to have not one but two beautiful children.

Little A's Birth Story: My long-awaited VBAC
I can hardly believe it has been only a week since Little A decided to grace us with her presence (two days late, I may add, and I'll never let her forget it!)... it seems like a lifetime ago. I am so grateful that Anna was able to come into town the next day and assist in Little D duties (ie baseball pitcher, swing pusher, racing buddy, etc) since she has been a huge help to us. I will be super incredibly sad to see her leave (not to mention we will probably be dealing with an epic meltdown on some little guy's part!) but alas the news would not be the same in Champaign without her.
Without further ado: Little A's VBAC story. Unedited. If birth stories gross you out, read no further and come back later.
Total "labor" time: 23 hours and 39 minutes.
Last Wednesday at 6:30 am I was woken up by none other than little d. I rolled out of bed and downstairs, helped him change his clothes and we played for awhile before settling into breakfast. Mr. D joined us for breakfast around 7:30, I remember having to get up to go pee at least twice, and both times were if I don't go this very second I will pee my pants desperate. I cursed my tiny pregnant smushed bladder and figured incontinence was something I should probably settle into and get used to for the next week (having resigned myself to the fact that baby girl was going to be a no show). Little did I know, that was my water breaking.
With little d, I was fully dilated and effaced and about ready to start pushing when my water finally broke, which it did with a big gush (one of the grossest moments of my life, to be sure). Needless to say, it did not even enter my mind that my water would break before the onset of my contractions. When we neared 9am, I was having to rush to the bathroom every 20ish minutes to "pee", nothing was leaking inbetween but when I would sit down it was, well, a mini gush of fluid. I knew if I didn't go the gym and this wasn't my water breaking it would really jinx it, so at 9:20 we headed (late) to the gym for my tri-weekly power lifting class. Everyone knows me by name and of course was super bummed that I showed up at all (since every time I come in late they assume I am in labor). I felt fine lifting my 20-25 pounds (down from 30-35 a few classes before) until we got up from doing tricep work on our backs (I was at an angle on a bench of course) and I felt the urge to go to the bathroom, so I went. Another gush. I looked up on my phone "how to know if my water broke" and it mentioned something about being clear and the smell... that it would not smell like urine. Ok, that made sense and it appeared that was what was going on. But I'm stubborn and wanted to finish the class, so I went back and finished. I felt great. Still no contractions, but I was hopeful they would come soon if my water was indeed broken.
At 10:30am, on the way home from the gym, I called Mr. D and told him to quickly shower and get ready, that we would be heading over to my Dr's office near my inlaws (so we could drop off little d) and I could take a test there to determine if it was amniotic fluid that was indeed leaking out of me. I called my doctor and described what had happened and he told me to skip going to his office and go right to the hospital. I tried not to jump for joy as we made it home, showered, and gathered all the stuff I had been accumulating over the last few months: a overnight bag and backpack for little d, purse and overnight bag for myself, gifts for little d, and some snacks. I have never been so grateful to have giant pads on hand pre-purchased like I did on the way to the hospital, where it felt like every bump made me leak even more. Still no contractions.
11:45am we dropped off little d at my inlaws, promising I would be pushing out his sister (finally!) so he could see her. He seemed excited but probably just because he knew he was about to be spoiled rotten for the next little while while I was at the doctor's. We made it to the hospital just after noon and they admitted me immediately. There was a lot of waiting around after I changed into my hospital clothes, but at least I didn't get turned away (one of my biggest fears since that happened last time) and I was actually pretty comfortable, minus the leaking. A nurse finally got around to checking my cervix and I was still at a "1"... no dilation since my doctor checked me earlier that week. I admitted that I had not been feeling any contractions so they went ahead and started me on antibiotics at 1pm(I tested positive again for group B strep, which isn't bad for me, it was really just to protect baby girl from getting sick, and the risk of infection rises when my water is broken, hence why they admitted me to the hospital without checking me first). Once we got there and they informed me I was not allowed to eat I immediately regretted my decision not to have lunch before we left... I had been snacking on some nuts and grapes since leaving the house and aside from cereal that morning it was all I had eaten that day.
2pm the nurses realized that after monitoring me for an hour, I wasn't lying. There were no contractions to be found, so, begrudgingly I allowed them to put me on pitocin. I didn't really have much of a choice since I wasn't progressing and they said that once my water broke they wanted to be sure I would have my baby within 24 hours (by 7:30 am Thursday). I was nervous because I knew pitocin would increase my chances of having a uterine rupture or something else to cause a repeat c-section, so they assured me they would be upping my dose slowly. If things went along like last time with little d, they figured once they got my contractions started, my body would take over and know what to do. Unfortunately little A's head was still so high up, they figured it would probably take quite awhile to work its way down. Boy, were they right!
3pm it started to get "busy" in the maternity ward. I didn't exactly understand (coming from a first delivery in Utah) how 12 ladies in labor was considered busy, but my nurse (all of whom were much older than I thought possible, aren't you supposed to be retired once you can't really hear your patients?) recommended I go ahead and get my epidural before things started to get really uncomfortable and the anesthesiologists got too busy. They had Mr. D leave the room for 30 minutes (that didn't happen last time with little d) and a cute little Indian lady read me my rights and placed my epidural. I guess I only remember the epidural from the c-section because I thought it was weird to still be able to move my legs, even if they did feel a little heavier than usual. Even weirder to be getting my epidural placed when I wasn't even feeling contractions, although I was supposedly getting quite a few, three minutes apart on average. I thought it was odd that they didn't put in a catheter but somehow I was able to hold in my bladder except for the times they put in a temporary catheter to empty my bladder.
4:30pm came and went and finally someone came in to check my cervix for the first time since when I checked in. Still a "1". They thought maybe it was because they kept having to empty my bladder so they put in a permanent catheter and I was left with a popsicle for the next two hours. I was starving! STARVING. I would have done anything for some food, ANY food. The commercials during a Friends marathon kept me salivating, while mentally making a checklist of all the food I was going to eat once this was all said and over with.
6:30pm two hours had passed since I had seen a nurse and I was only a 2. A TWO! THAT's IT?! I desperately asked for and received another popsicle and somehow caught a glimpse of a paper that informed me only siblings 14 years and older who had the flu shot were allowed in the maternity ward. I lost it. I had been away from my baby boy for going on seven hours and now they were going to tell me he wasn't allowed to come visit me?!?! Tears were pouring down my cheeks and I no longer cared about that stupid popsicle, I just wanted to be home with little d. As grateful as I was that Mr. D was able to be by my side that day, he wasn't the one I spent just about 24/7 with, and I felt that piece of my heart was missing. Would I ever see him again!? Gosh, it hurt so bad. Mr. D saw me getting hysterical and was quick to ask a nurse about visitations and she assured him little d would be allowed in, that this was a family friendly hospital. Crisis averted.
7pm the pitocin really started kicking in and I could feel the contractions but they were still not nearly even remotely close to what I had with little d before being admitted to the hospital last time. We started watching the Red Sox game and I realized I had not watched this much TV in a really long time; I was starting to get sick of it already.
7:20pm I gave myself my first shot of epidural...for those of you who don't know, when they put it in your spine you get a constant dose of it, and then you can get a little extra if you push a button. I was able to call little d and he spoke with me for a few minutes. He was on the ipad (no surprise there) but he was happy, having taken a long nap that afternoon and then being able to play with his uncle and grandparents. I was relieved and told him to enjoy his sleepover and that I would see him tomorrow, hoping and praying that I was telling him the truth. I got a new nurse, Darlene, and fell in love with her instantly. She referred to little A by name and was never shy about pronouncing how well she was doing during the contractions. Darlene would become my best friend before her shift was through.
8:30pm even while switching from multiple sitcoms to the Red Sox and Celtics game, I could not be distracted enough to notice the pain from the contractions. I had been moved multiple times in a couple different positions to "even out" the epidural but all I could feel were my contractions, and all I could NOT feel were my dead weight legs. I got another popsicle.
9, 9:30, 9:45... my will to only push the button every half hour was waning. It seemed like the drugs were pooling in my dead legs and nothing was stopping the pain I felt from the contractions. By 10pm Darlene wants me to sleep and so she calls in the anesthesiologist to give me a little boost on my dose.
11pm I continue to drug myself, the pain only getting worse as I find I am having to use some serious focus and yoga breath to keep from moaning out loud. They bring Mr. D a cot and he eventually falls asleep, not bothering to set his alarm for work (7am) the next day since we are pretty sure that with the severity of my contractions and how long we have been there, baby girl should be out within a few hours.
2am rolls around and I am LIVID. It takes everything in my power to take 10 slow, deep, focused breaths to get through each contraction. I can't focus on anything else but that clock, willing those 40 seconds to go faster so I can again find relief. You know that pain scale they show you at the hospital? I was maybe a 1 or 2 when I came in, and this was a 10...as in OMG THIS IS THE MOST AMOUNT OF PAIN I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED.... IS THIS WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO DIE? CAN IT POSSIBLY GET ANY WORSE THAN THIS??
By 3:30 am Mr. D is snoring beside me and I am trying not to have a panic attack. I have never had to deal with so much pain and all I can think of is that I need to let my body relax and do its job so this hellish torment can be over with as fast as possible. With every contraction, every breath was focused on relaxing my muscles, envisioning baby girl working her way down the birth canal. Darlene kept reminding me how well little A was doing through each contraction...she was even sleeping through some of them! Having had my first c-section in large part because of fetal distress, this was the best thing I could have heard.
at 4am, Darlene couldn't wait any longer. She had me checked (I was only a "4", I still had a long way to go!) and then she chased down (literally!!) the anesthesiologist and we made the decision to take out the first epidural and put in a new one. He reminded me (mid-contraction of course) that if the first one didn't work there was a possibility this second one wouldn't work as well. I wanted to scream and run and pull my hair out and cry but instead I just nodded and kept breathing, focusing on Darlene's hands holding mine and continuing to encourage me by telling me how relaxed and poised I was. By some small miracle we were able to get a second epidural placed and within 30 minutes I was drug from hell and put back in heaven again. I felt pressure but no pain.
4:30am I finally fell asleep and it was the best hour of sleep of my life... I had been awake nearly 22 hours!
5:30am I woke up with a start. I waited a few minutes to be sure but there was definitely pressure on my bum... I was feeling a serious need to push! Having not been checked for hours (I guess that is protocol when your water breaks, to minimize the chances of infection), I was elated when she announced that while I was having a contraction she could feel Little A's head! WHAT?! I woke up Mr. D, pulled up my legs and started pushing with each contraction. I joked with my nurse Darlene that we would have this baby out by the end of her 7:30 shift and she swore she would not leave my side until she saw baby girl.
6:15am after nurses telling Mr. D to look down there to see his baby girl's head during contractions, I couldn't wait any longer. I sprang at the change to get a mirror down there and surprised myself by not just being fascinated but being motivated with each push to see that little head crowning inside my body. I couldn't believe it (and this coming from a person who swore she would rather die than 1) have her husband even peeking down there while she was in labor and 2) have to witness herself the horror of a baby wrecking her lady bits). This was absolutely amazing and when a few interns who were about to graduate in a few weeks and had never seen a vaginal delivery showed up and wanted to watch, I surprised myself and welcomed them to watch, along with about a half dozen other strangers. the interns, two girls who reminded me of my own sisters, were sweet and helped keep me cool in between pushes, and got the camera ready so Mr. D could do more watching than videoing.
7am I was doing this. I was laboring and about to have a vaginal delivery. I could feel things being stretched in ways I never wanted them to be but none of that mattered; I was about to meet my daughter. I knew my body in such an intimate way as I had never known it before. I thought I knew my body when I ran the marathon last year, but this year was even different, better perhaps because I felt so close to my Savior, my Heavenly Father, and the moment I pushed her out and heard "7:11 am!" I knew I had just caught a glimpse of heaven. As they brought little A to my arms, wet with fluids and warm to my chest, I was so overwhelmed with love. Love for Mr. D. Love for my daughter, and son, even if he wasn't there. Love for Darlene and everyone else who helped coach me to this point. I was so unbelievably happy. Even as they stitched me back up from my second degree tears, I was still on cloud nine.
I did it. I got my VBAC after all.

I did it. I got my VBAC after all.

Proud moments
I can't wait for a book to be compiled of all the stories of the heroics and bravery displayed yesterday and in the weeks and months to come. Of the stories of those hundred plus injured who overcame great odds and obstacles to become better, stronger people. And I hope when the people who were responsible for these terrible actions hear those stories it will be a big slap in the face and they will realize that no matter what it was that they set out to do, they failed miserably. Boston is strong.

My Boston
This was not just an attack on my running community. This was not just an attack on my newfound home state, the birthplace of my husband and my baby girl. This was an attack on my marathon, on too many innocent lives on a day that should have been full of hope and happiness.
Today was supposed to be a day of celebration. Marathons are incredible because they unite people from all over the world, all different walks of life, under 26.2 miles.
Days like today make me physically sick. To think that the world will only get worse as my Littles get older makes my heart so terribly heavy. I am so grateful every day, but especially on days like today, for my knowledge of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and to know that there will ultimately be perfect justice out of tragedies like this.
Hugging my loved ones a little tighter today. Prayers and prayers going out to the runners, spectators, victims of the boston marathon, patriots day 2013.

From ice baths to sitz baths in 365 days
Today it has been a year since I ran my first marathon. A year since I challenged my mind and body to something I once never thought possible, on the grandest stage there is, and from Hopkinton to Boston I felt more sweat, tears, pain, happiness and love than I ever thought possible.
Boston humbled me and forced me to believe in myself despite great odds, it was on that hot spring day last year that I made a resolution to myself: if I could run a marathon, I could try for a VBAC. Three months later I was pregnant and attempted to keep in top form physically to assist in my confidence mentally over the course of the last nine months.
And I did it. Having a baby and running a marathon took a huge time commitment and were long preparatory processes. Maybe some people can just jump right into it head first but not me. My confidence grows in my preparation and to over prepare physically means I will be most ready mentally when the time arrives.
There's an awful lot I think about in those quiet hours of night feedings... But the most coming theme is love.
How much I love my sweet baby girl. And how, somehow, that love for her has made me love my little d even more as well! I have been extremely blessed with a loving network of family and friends to whom love knows no bounds. Although many of them love far away I have felt my Savior's love though their prayers.
I have been so incredibly abundantly blessed in a way at times I do not feel I deserve.
And my husband? Words can't describe how much my love for him continues to grow each day. I love him so so much.
Happy patriots day! Ill be watching the marathon from the comfort of my own home with my sister and my Littles.

Party of four
First family photo... Amazing how the relative calmness of baby girl accentuates the nuttiness of little d :) love these guys!
Seriously so smitten with our little doll
She's got the Dowling lovely dainty long fingers, her brother's button nose and beautiful puckered lips, her mom's hair and eyes (or so I think?) and her daddy's long legs and perfect ears.
In a word, she is perfection. And I can't believe I'm so okay with sharing my boys with such a beauty queen... They are so in love with her!
