Little d's first celtics game

In addition to attending just about every college sporting event before he turned one, He's been to his first Major League Baseball, lacrosse and now NBA game, all within less than a year after that. He wasn't perfect but he was stinking awesome for a two year old at his first game. Special thanks to the Ainges for giving us four seats so we were able to spread out. :) also we got to see our old pal Jimmer Fredette, and while it was fun watching the Celtics crush the Kings, we were excited to see a BYU cougar out on the court and even make a basket or two.

I felt bad towards the end of the game (which was entirely past his bedtime by hours) when he asked to go home, I convinced him to wait to see Kevin Garnett do the "Gino dance" (go look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about), but in the end he didn't do it, even though it was a blowout. Little d was so bummed but at least he zonked out on the car ride home.

30 weeks pregnant with #2

Only 10 weeks to go!
+26.5 (4 pounds in a week! i think thats a record this pregnancy... vs 35 last round) probably as a direct result of the monkey bread I made yesterday combined with the elaborate dinners we got taken out to by mr. D's coworkers. Also baby A is loving butter, carbs, chocolate, baked goods and everything full fat and flavorful. Sounds like the perfect girl, amirite?

Making stuff with little d

My main resolutions this year revolved around being the best kind of mom I can possibly be: being more in tune and involved with my son, teaching him about the gospel among other things, and making family mealtime enjoyable.

As I have been more sensitive to little d's needs and wants, I have been enjoying my time with him more, and even looking forward to when he wakes up from his nap because there is so much we enjoy doing together. Maybe it's because he's in a more agreeable stage of life or maybe it's because unlike the last year, I'm not constantly competing with other family members for his attention. Whatever it is, I am loving it and want it to last as long as humanly possible.

In an effort to make every day with my little d count before April 9 (and in an effort to help little d understand that his baby sister is going to have a birthday in 70 days!) I started a little paper chain countdown.

Little d also decided to turn our empty raisin box into a camera, so I put some of my artistic skills to use...apparently the sound a camera makes according to little d is "take take". Hilarious!! I left to talk with mr. D for a few minutes and came back to my boy taking pictures of his glue and glitter art. I think he's ready for some valentine making in another week!

And lastly, I finally got around to making some homemade gingerbread cookies and we used some ABC cookie cutters little d got for a Christmas present from his little girlfriend Lauren! Pretty sure the only reason little d loves Monday nights and is so agreeable during the family home evening lesson is because he knows we get treats afterwards.

Hopefully after this baby comes I can go back to not eating carbs like its my job, and the family can eat a little healthier without my daily treats!!

Little D's first pair of Nikes

When my FiL told me he wanted to buy little d a pair of Nikes, I was initially super skeptical. We had finally gotten out of our Stride Rite shoe phase and into some size 7s that were much easier to find (oh and his feet are not super extra wide anymore) and I was excited to not have to spend the same amount of money on my sons shoes as I do on my own. But since he offered to pay, I picked out a black and white pair I figured would go with just about anything and a week later, little d was beyond ecstatic to have his "new running shoes" and we can't get him to wear anything else. So lets all hope it doesn't snow anytime soon, or at least not till I can convince him that his "celtics (green) boots" are equally cool again.

So yes, he is the first one in our family to own a pair of Nike Free. And I'm actually a little embarrassed to admit I don't think I have ever owned a pair of Nikes since my running shoes have always been new balance, Adidas, or brooks.

And you know what? Mr. D and I have both noticed a difference in his running form. Bible. It's much more natural and he falls a lot less. Coincidence?

Throwback Thursday

Being two must be hard. Your emotions equate to that of a teenager, you're still figuring out how sentences are put together and expanded a limited vocabulary, figuring out how to run/hop/skip/keep up with bigger kids who already have this whole "being a person" thing figured out. Learning manners, remembering if you have to go to the bathroom, learning to tell the truth, discovering everything in your house exploring everything about the library/roads/gym/grocery store, making new friends while you are still trying to grasp what is socially acceptable, etc. interpreting what you are seeing or feeling or experiencing into words that make sense to others around you.

I can't believe how much little d is changing in such a short period of time. Most mornings he practically leaps out of bed to greet the day, and this week since Sunday we have been lucky enough to have that happen at 7-7:45 instead of the usual 6am!! (Which we are attributing to the patriots beanie that hasn't left his head all week). Afternoons always seem hard... No matter how long he naps (usually anywhere from just over an hour to 2.5 hours), he wakes up crying. He doesn't want anyone or anything, he just cries for at times 5 minutes and yesterday 45 minutes. It is heartbreaking but I just try to remember that sometimes the things you're experiencing are scary frustrating and can't be put into words. So I patiently pace, prepare snacks and games, occasionally asking if he is ok and wait for him to give me clearance to come into his room. Sometimes he will tell me about a ghost or missing hat or a bad dream or that he misses some extended family member, but I have found that as long as I give him his space and time to cry, when he is ready he always welcomes me with open loving arms, albeit with a tear streaked face.

Gosh I love him.

29 weeks pregnant with #2

Boot camp kicked my butt this morning.

But I am counting my blessings that I can work out, even if I get too many pity looks at the gym for my liking, especially when people find out I have until April.

My innie belly button is now an outie and laying on my back (which I have done before without any big problem) is officially coupled with a suffocating feeling in my lungs. I love food, have no aversions and am in fantastic health of which I cannot be more grateful for. +22.5 (vs 34)

little d at 2.5 years old

FAVORITES (or as he calls them, his "favarate-favarate")
food: gogurt, hershey kisses, turkey rollups, smoothies, candy of any sort (mr. D recently introduced him to pop rocks which he called "party rocks").
color: green and blue
toy: curious george backpack
game: basketball in the living room or imaginary baseball anywhere
stuffed animal: curious george
show: curious george (are we seeing a trend here?)
song: you're a mean one, mr. grinch
book: a curious george book he got from my parents for Christmas that has 8 stories, all of which I have read more times than I can remember
logos: BYU, Patriots, Bruins, Red Sox
Little d can
-pick out the letter "d" from just about anywhere consistently
-put on his own clothes and usually insists on doing so (shirt, pants without zipper, socks, shoes, boots)
-sleep consistently from 8pm to 6:15am with a 1.5 hour nap in the afternoon. He likes to pick out his own clothes each morning so I give him two options to choose from each morning, and while it was a nightmare to get him to change his clothes each morning, he understands the logic that PJs are for going to bed.
-He wakes up sweaty (usually soaking half his pillow, no joke) but happy to share his dreams or what he remembers from the day before.
-sleep in his "big boy bed" without getting out... I have a childlock on the door but every time he wakes up he calls me until I come get him out of bed
-count to 20 without assistance
-sing dozens of songs on his own, including a bunch of christmas songs I am not sure he will ever unremember
-help me wash dishes, prepare meals and snacks, feed the cat, make beds, sort laundry, clean up toys, etc. I have do doubt that he will be a huge help when the baby comes
-have an extremely active imagination. As of late he talks about a ghost who lives on our back porch window, has a talking baseball  and talks to his stuffed animals, especially George, whom he loves reading Curious George books to.
-watch Downton Abbey with me. As in, he watched the second half of the premiere episode and was talking about the wedding and how pretty that girl was for a few days afterwards.
-sit at the family dinner table and eat three meals with me/us. This is quite a feat since he has always been able to eat wherever he wants up until a few weeks ago, and I love only eating meals at the kitchen table, which he has been really respectful of. He is also very good with his pleases, thank yous and is working on "may I be excused." Also clears the table after a meal. Yes, I am a little obsessed with good manners.
-dance like a crazyman. Gangnam style throws him into this crazy breakdance I cannot even describe but it cracks me up every time.
-play by himself on his swingset. I am always out there with him, but it is nice to see him get on the slide and swings without having to lift him up every time (only when there was like 11 inches of snow on the ground).
-draw faces with circles around them and occasionally scribbles little "shirts" right under them.
-understand the concept between our home and my inlaws (darsi's house or the uncles house)
-be extremely independent. Is able to play by himself while I am making dinner or taking a shower (when he is usually playing with a few toys in the sink)
-brush his own teeth and loves doing that little routine at least two but sometimes three times a day. It involves taking a little bit of water from the faucet on his finger, and cleaning the bottom of the toothbrush holder, putting toothpaste on his brush and brushing (he can spit properly now), rinsing the sink and giving me the toothbrush, after which he will wash his hands with soap and water while I do a second tooth brushing. Better to overdo it than to hate it (like he did a few short months ago, where he cried while I brushed his teeth), right?
-make jokes. The other day we were stopped in traffic at a red light and he told me that Kevin eats red lights and it made me laugh so hard that he continued to tell me what else silly Kevin eats: trucks, cars, snow, green lights, etc. He LOVES making people laugh and will go to great lengths to do so.
-adjust well to other people and is extremely friendly, what with nursery once a week, going to my inlaws at least once a week, a mommy and me class at the library once a week, and daily trips to the gym daycare, he is getting to be better around other kids. The funniest thing for me at the gym is that they have this huge window where he can see me on the treadmills and he loves to wave, smile and blow kisses as well as give me the thumbs up while I run... a GREAT motivation.
-Finally go through the grocery store with me again (we hit a rough patch filled with meltdowns right after we first moved), where we get a cart with those cars and he "drives" us around. His favorite part is our visit to the deli where they give him a turkey rollup and cheese slice. We have also discovered the power of the flower shop that gives him a blue balloon each week he remembers to request it.
-still pick a mean fight with Kevs. He will just sit eye to eye with him and they take turns batting at each other (like a game of chicken?) until one of them cries because he got scratched or runs away and hides. Wild guess who each one is, and little d always finds that game hysterical.
-sit through a simple family home evening, and looks forward to scripture reading (because we read scriptures before curious george), FHE (because it involves treats and coloring), and prayers because he just loves saying prayers. He always prays to "and bless Blake on a mission" without fail, even if it is after we have said amen :)
-remember things with terrifying accuracy. I promised him we could have a picnic outside "tomorrow" and it happened to be freezing outside the next day, literally. I tried not to mention anything but he insisted on we three eating lunch in the cold. I will pay better attention to the weather forecast in the future.
He is fully aware he is going to have a sister in the spring and is beyond excited, giving me extra treats because we've been talking about how the digestive system works for himself and myself (he actually tried to force me to eat a cracker the other day because he just KNEW baby A wanted it). He tells me (unprompted!) when I get dolled up for church that I look beautiful and whenever I have just painted my nails always makes a comment about how nice they look.
He will also brag to the cashier at the grocery store, personal trainer at the gym, random person at the library, etc about his baby sister. I'm still a little scared to put the crib in his room, but when that happens sometime in the next month I am hoping it will look different enough that he won't remember it as his own. Also, he calls all beds "cribs".
So sure, he throws a mean tantrum when he can't get what he wants or when something is not predictable. But the consistency of the last two weeks or so has been really good for the both (three) of us and there are not quite so many tantrums, and coupled with the fact that he is not constantly in front of a screen has made for a much more pleasant child, even if he still picks his nose. He is at least learning that "no" is going to be a permanent part of his vocabulary. He's learning a LOT, actually.

But he still loves animals, sports, sports, and more sports so I know he's mine and as much as he has changed over the last 2.5 years, the basic parts of him that make him my little d are unchanged.
I love this boy.

Christmas x2

We spent christmas day with my inlaws and the next day I flew out to Ohio (solo!) to spend a few days with my family, since my little sister Sarah was taking out her endowments. We spent all of Christmas morning skyping with Uncle Blake on a mission in Italy and just spending quality family time together.
Like watching Gangnam style. Multiple times. And every parody ever made of it.
(pajamas courtesy of the dowling boys in the early 1980's)
It was really hard to leave these handsome boys for three days, but somehow I did it.
And I even got a snowy send off (do you love the ugly excavator in our driveway? yeah someone forgot it and left it there for weeks... so annoying. but at least it's gone now).

Ah... home sweet home. Christmas day part two came on the 28th, when Bananas came into town.
So many presents. Love my mom's fabulous christmas decor.
My mom has these little friends that like to hang out in the huge bay window outside our living room. Sunbathing and watching us for three hours while we opened presents was hopefully worth it, since we went and bought a $8 block of squirrel food for them the next day. Smart guys. :)
Did I mention that Sarah had a craving for a Panera smoothie? So we went there and bought a dozen bagels. Because we Krons are total carbohydrate addicts like that. Oh, and outside Panera was this darling snowman Sarah fell in love with and I think he's the reason why she's decided to hold off on putting her mission papers in. I can't blame her. He is a stud.
Among the bazillion presents we gifted to each other (only a half bazillion being a million different kinds of chocolates), Bananas got us Kardashian jewelry and matching hunger games necklaces. They are all slightly different but each has our favorite quote "You love me, real or not real? Real." Gosh we are so obsessed and no, November cannot come fast enough for my liking.
My parents got me a bunch of fabulous maternitywear (and I can't even feel guilty about it since have you seen my sisters? They'll be married and babymaking soon, so really it's an investment on my parents' part), but my favorite outfits were of the 0-12 month variety...
Then we hit up Red Lobser where I indulged in my first real pregnancy craving that I haven't been able to indulge in since there are NONE in New England. Pina Coladas and trying to convince DK to stop coloring long enough to eat a fruit or vegetable...ahhh love my family.
Have I mentioned how much I love dessert and those rolls?!

Someone got a non blurry picture, right?
 And our yearly sibling pictures

 Right before watching Les Mis

 Visiting my grandma
 LOVE my cute parents!!
Graeter's. Wouldn't be a trip home without it.
Finishing our family time with some Apples to Apples.
For as often as we play it together, we sure do forget the rules quickly.
Ahem dad... so much for not working over the holidays?
The least blurry family shot I got all trip. That's what I get for not bringing my real camera.
In case you were wondering what the boys did with their time while I was gone... ipad and football pretty much sums it up, I believe. ;) And I came home with a load of goodies for little d, including his curious george backpack (the new diaper bag that I don't have to carry around!), BYU sweatshirt, Curious George stuffed animal, and police car slippers. What a stud.
It was a great trip and I had a fabulous time with my immediate family, but while I missed my boys dearly, one did not miss me at all. Whomp whomp. What a stinker.
